Severe periventricular space (PVS) pathology is a marker for increased cognitive decline and dementia risk, independent of other small vessel disease (SVD) markers.
Why this matters
PVS are seen in the basal ganglia (BG) and centrum semiovale (CSO) in older adults, and may be associated with discrete pathophysiology, and potentially, impairments in different cognitive domains.
PVS pathology may constitute a potentially important biomarker for early dementia diagnosis, subtyping and prognosis, and may have a significant impact on individualized treatment; as such, further research of PVS etiology and sequelae is required.
