Is 7T MRI ready for use in epilepsy?

7T MRI may be useful when determining whether patients with epilepsy are candidates for neurosurgery, according to researchers at AES 2018.

“Compared with 3T MRI, the better boundaries and extent of the lesion seen in 7T images can help neurosurgeons decide which regions to resect,” said Dr Steven Stufflebeam of the Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging and Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.

Access to 7T MRI continues to increase, and there are now nearly 100 sites worldwide that offer 7T MRI. Adoption has been limited by the costs and site challenges involved and the need for an imaging team with the necessary training and expertise.
