Post-COVID-19 seizures and status epilepticus may arise from a postinfectious inflammatory response

Mounting evidence suggests that seizures and status epilepticus (SE) after COVID-19 may be caused by a postinfectious inflammatory response.

According to Professor Kara Melmed of the New York University in New York, New York, USA, acute seizures and SE have been reported in patients with COVID-19. Multiple factors can influence seizure risk, including the presence of hypoxia, electrolyte imbalance, hyperglycemia, and use of certain medications.
