Takeaway
Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is associated with increased risk of post-stroke dementia (PSD) in a linear fashion where higher LDL-C levels lead to higher risk; and higher levels of triglycerides are linearly associated with decreased PSD risk.
Why this matters ?
Current U.S. guidelines do not recommend post-stroke LDL-C levels, despite recommendations for statin therapy use, and the impact of lipid levels on dementia risk has not been established.
This study provides evidence that lower LDL-C targets may need to be considered to aid in risk reduction for PSD.
